TIL: The Bald Eagle Was Not the National Bird of the US
President Biden signed legislation making the bald eagle the official bird of the United States
Bald Eagle Finally Gets Official Recognition as America’s National Bird
In a historic moment, the bald eagle—long celebrated as a symbol of America's power and resilience—has been officially designated as the United States’ national bird. President Joe Biden signed the legislation on Tuesday, correcting an oversight that spanned more than two centuries. Although the bald eagle has graced the Great Seal of the United States since 1782 and is featured on countless government emblems, it had never been formally recognized in the U.S. Code as the nation’s official bird—until now.
The majestic bald eagle, with its iconic white head, yellow beak, and brown body, has been an enduring emblem of American identity. It was first chosen for the Great Seal alongside the motto “E Pluribus Unum,” symbolizing unity in diversity. The bird also appears on military insignia, U.S. currency, and the presidential flag. As USA.gov explains, the bald eagle's selection as the national emblem in 1782 cemented its role as an integral part of America's visual and cultural heritage.
“The bald eagle is more than a bird; it’s a testament to the spirit of freedom and strength that defines our nation,” said a congressional representative. With its habitat exclusive to North America, this overdue recognition reinforces the eagle’s unique connection to the United States.

All this time I thought the national bird of the United States was the bald eagle. But nope. Not until today!
